Benson E. Tawney, Jr., 84, died Thursday, December 17, 2015. He was the husband of Shirley (Hare) Tawney. They were married for 51 years before her passing on April 18, 2006. A public viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, December 21, 2015 at the Mortuary. Interment will follow in New Freedom Cemetery. The Rev. Melissa A. McDade will officiate. Benson was born November 14, 1931, the son of the late Benson E. Tawney, Sr. Benson retired from the Maryland State Police Administration after more than 30 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, going to Lincoln Speedway to watch sprint car races and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his children, David (Patty) Tawney and Jeanetta (Jim) Tyson. He was the grandfather of Charlie Heaps, Jr., Chambra Heaps and Millie Lighty; and great-grandfather of Kiarra Lighty and Jaycen Alder. He is also survived by one brother; and two sisters.
