Charles F. Otto, 98, passed away Friday, July 7, 2017. He was the loving husband of the late Jane Elizabeth (Hood) Otto. Born in Baltimore, MD, Charles was the son of the late Alexander F. and Lillian M. (Courtney) Otto. Charles was a U.S. Veteran, serving in the WV National Guard. He worked as a R. R. Brakeman for the Patapsco, Back River Railroad out at Sparrows Point Shipping Yard, MD, which instilled in him a love for hearing old diesel trains like the one in New Freedom. He was an avid Orioles fan, a firm believer in taking vitamins, enjoyed the crab cake dinners at Bethlehem Steltz Reformed Church, and found great joy in spending time at the New Freedom Senior Center. Charles is survived by a daughter, Deborah L. Shields and her fiancé, Robert W. Ensor; a grandchild, Hilary Carmen and her husband, Matt; and a great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Carmen. Charles was the last of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by a step daughter, Barbara Fisher. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 to 2 pm on Friday, July 14, at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A memorial service will begin at 2 pm with Rev. Melissa A. McDade officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
