Edward Emory “Speed” Rehmeyer, Jr., passed away on April 5, 2017. He was living in New Freedom at his daughter’s home, his granddaughter was by his side during his peaceful passing. Born September 28, 1924, in Hungerford, PA, he was the son of the late Edward, Sr. and Essie (Sutton) Rehmeyer. Speed was the youngest of 10 children, which all had preceded him in death. He was also predeceased in death by his son, Edward Rehmeyer, III, who died June 8, 1967 while serving his country as a Marine. As a child, Edward lived with his family on a farm, working hard and experiencing many incredible adventures. In the 1930’s he was able to drive across the country with his mother and brother, to visit his sister in California. Speed continued his love of travel throughout North America through riding the train back and forth to visit family, hauling produce up and down the east coast, driving tour buses through New York City, vacationing with his family along the shore, and taking extensive road trips with his wife and beloved friends in his ’66 Lincoln Continental. With all of that travel he chose to always reside in a 4-mile radius of an area in Southern York County, always respecting and enjoying everything this area has to offer. Throughout his life he enjoyed driving through the countryside. Rehmeyer’s Hollow was one of his favorite drives, bringing back memories of his Pop, and his great uncle, Nelson. He was recently interviewed for and featured in the documentary ‘Hex Hollow’, as one of the surviving relatives from a historic event that took place in our local community. Some of Speed’s fondest memories are from when he was a young man, experiencing the Big Bands that brought music, dancing, and great times to the York area, particularly Glenn Miller and the Valencia Ballroom. He loved fishing, spending time on the water, water skiing, beach time, and seafood. He enjoyed and excelled at playing cards, hosting many card clubs and poker nights. He had many pets and farm livestock throughout his life and always loved being with animals. He enjoyed the local auctions. Speed worked at AMP for many years and was a skilled wood worker at Sielings Furniture Co. in Railroad, PA. After retirement he continued to own and operate Rehmeyer’s Produce for many years, selling produce and seafood at his storefront on Main Street in Shrewsbury, PA. He made regular early morning trips to the old Baltimore fish market to stock the coolers. This location was known as “The Building” to family and friends, and was a host of many hoe downs, stew and soup making ventures, parade parties, it housed farm equipment, cars, bear skins, fun times and laughter. A family friend has purchased the building and restored much of it to its original condition, which was of one of the first Ford dealerships on the East Coast, “Turnpike Motor Co.”, that H W Rehmeyer built and operated. He was always a hard worker, spending much time cutting, hauling, and splitting trees for firewood, which he enjoyed doing with family, especially his grandsons. The farmer in Speed always worked the ground and grew produce, to both eat and sell, which will continue this summer with the tomato plants he started by seed two weeks ago. He is survived by a son, Terry L. Rehmeyer and his wife Pat of Millsboro, DE; a daughter, Jane L. Emery and her husband Richard of New Freedom, PA; three grandchildren, Bryan and wife Amy, Jessica and husband Matt, and Dylan; four greatgrandchildren, Tyson, Mya, Rhys, Fisher; as well as, many nieces and nephews and extended family members. Edward was often on the go and was adored by many in the community, whom will surely miss seeing him.Speed loved to tell stories, he had a rich and extensive knowledge of York County, and anyone fortunate enough to have heard some, will forever remember incredible moments of history.
