Gale Dennis "Butch" Marsh

Gale Dennis “Butch” Marsh of New Freedom, Pennsylvania, passed away at Wellspan York Hospital on January 18, 2026. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia on June 18, 1940, he was the son of the late Carson and Cherie (Baehr) Marsh. He met the love of his life, Tish Hodgin at Grove City College in 1959. A few short years later Butch and Tish were Married and have been inseparable for 64 years.

“Butch” retired from Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s Sparrows Point (Baltimore, MD) plant after 40 years of dedicated and faithful service. After graduating in 1962 from Grove City College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering, he quickly advanced from Assistant Superintendent to Technical Assistant and Experimental Engineer in the Metallurgical Department. “Butch” spent his remaining years before retirement at Bethlehem Steel as the Manager of Quality Assurance.

“Butch” was a member of the Bon Air Country Club in Glen Rock, PA. On days when the wind was blowing just right and the greens were snooker table smooth, he was as close as one could get to being a “Scratch” Golfer. All of his close, friendly competitors were Bright Green with Envy of his skills and precision out on the links of Bon Air. Butch and Tish spent many relaxing weeks at a Time Share they owned in Ocean City, Maryland. Butch also enjoyed bicycle riding in and around Hilton Head, South Carolina. As other means of relaxation, Butch enjoyed playing cards as a member of the Ramsgate Bridge Club and frequently kicking back and immersing himself into the pages of a favorite fiction novel. For many, many years, Butch was a Cub Scout/Boy Scout leader for his son Stephen’s Scout Troop #497. In his later years, Butch Intensely enjoyed and cherished attending the many and varied sporting events involving his beloved Grandchildren.

Gale Dennis “Butch” Marsh is survived and deeply missed by his wife Letitia “Tish” (Hodgin) Marsh, two children Jill (Marsh) Mewhirter and her husband James and Stephen Joseph Marsh and his wife Kristin. He is also survived by Grandchildren Tyler, Travis (wife Delaney), Cody (Wife Karen) Mewhirter, and Isabella and Andrew John Marsh. Surviving Great-Grandchildren include Ryleigh, Austin, Mackenzie and Harper Mewhirter.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at Mason Dixon Baptist Church, 713 Campbell Rd., New Freedom, Pennsylvania from 10 to 11a.m. A memorial service for Butch will begin at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gale Dennis “Butch” Marsh’s name to Mason Dixon Baptist Church.

Hartenstein Funeral and Cremation Care, 24 N. Second Street, New Freedom, PA is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
