Gene Robert Owens, 82, of Shrewsbury, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late Eugene B. and Eleanore E. (Williams) Owens. He was the husband of Carol (Hoefler) Owens.
Gene was an Army Veteran, serving in Germany during the Vietnam-era. Gene earned a bachelor’s degree from the California State University in Fullerton, CA and worked for many years in the automotive and health insurance industries. He was an avid fan of the York Revolution baseball team and held season tickets since they started in 2007. Gene was a long time active and supportive member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church of New Freedom. He was an amateur radio operator (HAM call sign W6ORZ). Gene was also a licensed pilot in his younger years. He also enjoyed model trains. Gene and Carol also enjoyed going on many cruises together.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Daniel Owens (Evette); daughter-in-law, Erika; 5 grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; and half-brothers, Bill Owens, and Daniel Owens. He was preceded in death by his son, Philip Owens.
Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Wednesday, January 14th from 6-8pm at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, Pa 17349. A funeral Mass will be on Thursday, January 15th at 11am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom, Pa 17349. Interment will immediately follow in the adjoining cemetery.
