Gladys Pearl Burton, 82, formerly of New Freedom, died Wednesday, May 31, 2017. She was the loving wife of Roland F. Burton, Sr. who died May 1, 2015. There will be a viewing from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2017, at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, June 5, at the mortuary. Interment will follow in the New Freedom Cemetery. Born February 10, 1935, in Glen Arm, MD, she was the daughter of the late Bryan and Martha (Bond) Pearce. Gladys and her late husband, Roland, owned and operated Spring Water Farm in New Freedom for many years until their retirement. They began farming in Glen Arm, MD, and that farm is still in operation today. Gladys enjoyed square and line dancing, and was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She played softball as a child and she enjoyed word searches in her later years. Surviving are two children, Roland F. Burton, Jr., and his wife, Dorothy of Manchester, MD, and Kenneth M. Burton, and his wife, Regina of Stewartstown; five grandchildren, David, Christopher, Rebecca, and Allison Burton, and Jamie Cheeks; four great-grandchildren, Avery, Connor, Chace, and Caroline; two sisters, Kathryn Becker and Charolotte Forwood, both of Baltimore; and a great grand dog, Raven, who was also known as "Sweetheart". She was preceded in death by a son, Stephen W. Burton, and siblings, Bryan, Ruth, Mildred, and William Clifford Pearce.
