Helen Jane Hildebrand (Mcdowell)

Helen J. Hildebrand, 91, formerly of Shrewsbury, died Monday, July 25, at her residence in York. She was wife of the late Quinton R. "Shorty" Hildebrand. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 29, at 1 p.m. at Stewartstown United Methodist Church, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, with the Revs. David E. McDowell and Robert V. McDowell officiating. Following a light luncheon, a graveside service will be held at Joseph Giesey Memorial Cemetery, Shrewsbury, at 3 p.m. The J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc. of New Freedom is assisting the family. Helen was born in Hopewell Township, York County, Pa., a daughter of the late Maynard M. and Ida Lillian (Wright) McDowell. She was a 1941 graduate of the former Stewartstown High School. Helen had then received a professional certificate from the Thompson Business Institute. She had been employed at the former Stewartstown Sewing Factory, the former American Insulator Company, the former AMP, Inc., and of the U.S. Post Office in Stewartstown. Helen had grown up attending the Stewartstown United Methodist Church and became a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ of Shrewsbury, where she was their financial secretary, a choir member and a member of their fellowship committee. She and her late husband were avid bowlers, golfers and gardeners. Helen leaves a son, Gerald B. "Jerry" Hildebrand and his wife Beverly of York; a daughter, Mona J. Gladfelter of York; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sweitzer of Dallastown, and Phyliss Hess of Spry; and a brother-in-law, Arthur Hildebrand of Winterstown. Helen was preceded in death by two brothers, Maynard M. "Mac" McDowell and Norman G. McDowell. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul UCC Memorial Fund,161 S.
