Helen W. Stewart, 95, died Sunday at Shrewsbury Retirement Village. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Stewart. Born April 28, 1921, in New Freedom, she was the daughter of the late Margaret and James Wright. Helen graduated from New Freedom High School, West Chester College, and Millersville University. She began a 52-year teaching career in a one-room school. Her career spanned from one-room schools through computer technology education. She was honored for her 52-year teaching career by George and Barbara Bush at the White House in Washington, D.C. She was a member of Slate Ridge Presbyterian Church where she served as deacon and Sunday School teacher. An avid gardener, she grew vegetables and flowers at the dairy farm she shared with her husband. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Harry Wright; and a sister, Hilda Goodling. Surviving are two sisters, Betty Shirey and Pauline Hupper; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. A graveside service honoring Helen's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at Centre Presbyterian Cemetery, 83 New Park Road, New Park, PA 17352. There will be no viewing. J.J.
