John Wilbur Snyder, 98, died Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Mennonite Home in Lancaster. He was the beloved husband of the late Marie M. (Miller) Snyder for 72 years. A viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 4 at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Mortuary with Pastor Terry Felton officiating. Private burial at the First Baptist Cemetery of Hereford will be held at the convenience of the family. Born October 10, 1918 in Maryland Line, Baltimore County, MD, Wilbur was a son of the late Rush A. and C. May (Hendrix) Snyder. Wilbur was a member of Mason Dixon Baptist Church in New Freedom. He loved gardening and cutting the grass and was an active bowler and golfer. A truck driver by trade, he retired in 1983 following 40 years of service with Mountainside Trucking of Linthicum, MD. Each morning, he got up and reported to a job he loved, then drove back home to the family he loved. Wilbur was a simple man, lived a simple life wondrously well, and was a joy to have known. "Rest well. Love you forever…always have, always will." Wilbur was the father of Donna S. Ensor, Susie Bailey, and the late H. Richard "Dick" Snyder. He is also survived by Dave Phillips, fiancé of Donna, Rick Bailey, husband of Susie, and Gloria Snyder, wife of the late Dick Snyder; grandchildren Debbie, Greg, Greta, Michael and Nicholas; great-grandchildren, Jes, John, Kayla, Owen, Nolan, David, Emmeline and Rachael; and by many Snyder and Hendrix nieces and nephews. Wilbur was also preceded in death by a grandson, John R. Snyder; and siblings, Everett M. Snyder and Florence A. Young.
