Joseph J. Carter

d. February 24, 2026

On February 24, 2026, Joseph John “Jack” Carter III, aged eighty-five, of New Freedom, Pennsylvania went home to be with the Lord, after a prolonged battle with kidney disease. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Nancy Carole Carter (nee Hamer) and grandson, Timothy Carter.

Jack also leaves his children Gregory Carter (Brenda) of Hilton Head, South Carolina; Cindy Carter of Pikesville, Maryland; Eric Carter (Rachel) of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania; and Amanda Rosier (Jeffrey), of New Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Memories of “RoRo” (as he was known to his grandchildren) will be cherished by Nick Carter, Jay Cummings, Tabitha Carter, Zachary Carter, Nathaniel Rosier, Austin Rosier and five great-grandchildren.

For over 36 years Jack was employed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Dundalk where he worked in the Information Services department. In the 1980’s, he was happy to participate in the Loaned Executive program for the United Way of Maryland where he made longtime friends. Post retirement he worked for Dundalk Lumber Company and later Penn-Mar Human Services as a van driver.

Jack was a devout Christian and grew up in St Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Dundalk. After moving to the Hereford Zone, he attended both the Hereford United Methodist Church in Monkton (where he served as Treasurer) and Maryland Line United Methodist Church.

Jack enjoyed serving the community in a variety of ways. In 1962, he joined Masonic Lodge #183. He was raised to Master Mason in the same year and remained a member until 2013. In the 1970’s, Jack and his wife Carole served as a foster family for Maryland Children’s Aid Society, caring for more than sixty-seven children during a 20-year period.

Jack was past President, Treasurer, and an Engine Operator at the Hereford Volunteer Fire Company where he served from 1982 through 1992. He was also Lieutenant, Treasurer, and an Engine Operator at the Maryland Line Volunteer Fire Company where he served from 2002 until 2013.

Known for his calm and gentle nature, Jack had a kind word for everyone. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, woodworking, reading his Bible and checking the weekly sales circulars for deals.

There will be no immediate service. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations to your local volunteer fire department.
