Kermit Eugene “Gene” Dickson, 83, of Fawn Grove, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. Born on April 23, 1942 in Winston-Salem, N.C., he was the son of the late Kermit Ulysses Tuttle and Georgia Kathleen (Roupe). He was the loving and devoted husband to the late Helen Ruth (Wiley) Dickson for 55 years at the time of her passing on September 10, 2019.
Gene moved from North Carolina to Street, MD as a young child. He graduated from North Harford High School in 1960 and continued his education at Harford Community College. In 1961, he joined the Army; serving proudly as a Military Policeman in Germany until 1963.
After being Honorably Discharged, he started his career as a meat cutter/butcher by serving an apprenticeship for two years. Gene then went on to work for The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, eventually retiring after 44 years as a meat manager.
Gene was an avid animal lover, including owning horses for 50 years and doted upon many special dogs, cats and goats. He took great detail in taking care of his home of 57 years that he shared with his wife, Helen. Gene was always good humored and enjoyed the fellowship of many long-lasting friends. He was a very moral man and had high standards of what was right and wrong. He expected the same of his children. Gene always trusted in God and accepted Jesus as his Savior when he was a young boy.
Above all, Gene’s life was dedicated to his faith, wife, and children. Gene stated, “The greatest gift a father can give to his children is to love their mother, and I loved her dearly.” Gene yearned to be in Jesus’ arms and be reunited with the love of his life, Helen. 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Gene is survived by his three children, Scott E. Dickson (Angie), Stephen W. Dickson, and Melissa J. Heaps (Paul); and six grandchildren, Alex, Ben, and Zach Dickson, and Chad, Todd, and Tabitha Heaps.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. The York County Veterans Honor Guard will provide full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gene’s memory to Days End Farm Horse Rescue, PO, Box 309, Lisbon, Maryland 21765 or https://defhr.org/. Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown, PA 17363 is assisting with arrangements.
