Lloyd Douglas (“Doug”) Matthews, 83, of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, passed away on March 13, 2026. He was born on August 22, 1942, in Stewartstown to the late Gerald and Ellen Matthews-Brown (Lloyd).

After graduating in 1960 from Kennard-Dale High School, Doug served proudly in the United States Army Reserves for 34 years. In addition, he worked for 40 years at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground as a civilian draftsman and office administrator.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Judith (“Judy”) Matthews (Mitchell); his brother, Don Matthews and wife Annie; his nephews, Bryon Matthews and wife Sonia, and Adam Weir and wife Lara; and his niece, Donna Blaney and husband Tony. He is also survived by three great-nephews, Ozzie, Eli, and Nolan Weir. He was preceded in death by his niece, Amanda Weir.

Farming was one of Doug’s greatest joys as he managed the Mitchell Family Farm in Churchville, Maryland, where he grew tomatoes and peppers that he sold to local farm stands, and tended to fields of corn and soybeans. In Stewartstown, he also cared for the Matthews family flock of sheep, which earned him the CB radio handle “Good Shepherd.”

Doug cherished spending time with family and friends, including those friends who became like family over the years.

Music was another of Doug’s great joys. He sang bass, and sometimes tenor, in the Chancel Choir at church and was always ready to lead a slightly out-of-tune but heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” at family gatherings.

Doug was a long-time member of the White Rose Street Rod Association and proudly drove his 1947 Ford two-door sedan. He was also a long-time member of the Stewartstown Lions Club.

A public viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., (19 S. Main Street, Stewartstown, PA.)
