Mary Elizabeth Freeland, beloved wife of Charles Thomas Freeland, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025 at her home in Parkton, MD. Mary was born on June 23, 1930 in Parkton to the late Jonas John Waltermyer and Bessie Elizabeth Waltermyer (Turnbaugh).
Mary enjoyed collecting and displaying antiques, particularly antique household implements, and she was an avid gardener with a great fondness for houseplants and flowers. Her little dog Cosmo was a source of delight for her. She also had an abundance of knowledge on not only her own family history but also the relationships among other families in northern Baltimore County and southern York County. She served as a trip coordinator for AARP for many years. In this capacity, she and her husband Charles visited many sites around the U.S.
She is survived by her husband Charles; sons Terry (wife Dawna) and Bill (wife Paula); grandchildren Amy Wilson (husband Corey), Brooke Kraft (husband Ryan), and Brian Freeland (fiancée Sarah Hardy); great granddaughters Kayla and Eleanor Kraft; sister Ruth Ann Poe; several nephews and nieces (including Kevin Waltermyer and Ronald Poe, who provided Mary and her husband with much support in the years following the death of their son, John); and, amazingly, an uncle, Howard Turnbaugh. She was preceded in death by her son John Freeland and her sister Helen Amos.
Public visitation is to take place on Thursday, May 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hartenstein’s Funeral Home in New Freedom, PA. The funeral service will be held at Hartenstein’s on Friday, May 9 beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Parkton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church.
