Reginald Brinton Gemmill MD, 97, of Stewartstown, died at 4:25 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Jean Gemmill (Kunkle). They had celebrated 53 years of marriage. Reg was born December 24, 1928, in York Hospital. He was the son of the late Norman Gemmill MD and Ruth Gemmill.
He graduated from Stewartstown High School (1946), Franklin & Marshall College (1950) in Lancaster, PA, and Jefferson Medical College (1955) in Philadelphia, PA. His internship was at York Hospital (1955-1956). He then served active duty in the United States Navy (1956-1958) in Washington DC and the Navy Reserves until 1967.
He returned to Stewartstown and joined his father’s General Medical Practice in 1958. They worked together for 11 years; Reg delivered 450 babies during that span. After his father retired, Reg continued his family practice until 1994.
Reg and Jean had 3 children; Marty Kottmyer married to Bob Kottmyer of York, John Gemmill married to Kim Gemmill of Stewartstown, Jud Gemmill married to Kathy-Jo Gemmill of Ocean View, DE. Reg had 4 grandchildren; Lindsey Gemmill married to Travis Ryer, Lucas Gemmill, Bruce Gemmill married to Kristin Gemmill, and Shannon Hall married to Shane Hall. Reg also had 6 great grandchildren: Olivia Ryer, Ava Gemmill, Miles Hall, Isabel Gemmill, Jordan Hall and Brynn Gemmill.
Reg earned his Eagle Scout in 1943 with Troop 27. He was an active member of the Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder and Trustee for many years. He loved to sing and devoted 80 years to the church choir and sang at many weddings. He was an active member of the Stewartstown Lions Club since 1958, serving two terms as president and treasurer from 1999-2022. Reg was a member of the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the York County Medical Society. He was also a member of the Shrewsbury Lodge #423 since 1950, Worshipful master 1968 and a member of Harrisburg Consistory. In his spare time, Reg played golf at Pleasant Valley Golf Course and was the club champion in 1966.
Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Sunday, January 18th from 6-8pm at Stewartstown Presbyterian Church, 14 College Ave., Stewartstown, Pa. A second viewing will be on Monday, January 19th from 10-11am at the church. The funeral service will begin at 11am at the church, officiated by Pastor Mwat Asedeh. Burial will be at Round Hill Cemetery, Cross Roads, following the service.
