Richard Eugene “Dick” Hyson, born January 1, 1940, in Cross Roads, Pennsylvania, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on April 30, 2026, at The Residence at Fitz Farms in York, Pennsylvania, having run the race set before him and kept the faith. He was the son of the late Howard and Sara (née Enfield) Hyson. He was the beloved husband of Joyce Zimmerman Hyson, with whom he shared over 63 years of marriage, having wed on October 13, 1962—a union rooted in love, faith, and enduring commitment.

He is survived by his two sons: Todd Hyson and his wife, Marie, and Shean Hyson and his wife, Christina, who carry forward his legacy of faith, family, and steadfast character. He was a devoted and loving grandfather to three grandchildren: Samantha Roedts and her husband, Ian; Heather Bartsch and her husband, Matthew; and Tori Hyson, each of whom brought him great joy. He was further blessed with five great-grandchildren: Cirilla, Elarra, and Theodore Roedts; and Cayman and Coburn Bartsch, a continuing testament to the generations the Lord built through him.

He is also survived by his siblings: Donald Hyson and his wife, Judy; and Diane McCleary. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Downs and her husband, Bradley, and by his brother-in-law, Bill McCleary.

Dick was a lifelong resident of Cross Roads, Pennsylvania, a place he loved and faithfully called home throughout his life. He was a graduate of Kennard-Dale High School, Class of 1958. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1960, stationed at the U.S. Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut. Serving as a Draftsman Third Class, he carried out his duties with diligence and integrity, and was Honorably discharged upon completion of his service.

Following his time in the Navy, Dick dedicated over thirty years of service to Caterpillar Tractor in York, Pennsylvania, where he worked in various roles and earned a reputation for his skill, perseverance, and work ethic, ultimately becoming a machine repairman. He was exceptionally gifted mechanically—there was little he could not fix, and few problems he did not patiently work through until they were made right.

A man who worked with his hands and took pride in honest labor, Dick was an avid woodworker. Nearly every room in his home bore his mark—something built, shaped, or crafted by his hands. His craftsmanship extended even further into the art of building flintlock rifles from scratch, a meticulous pursuit that reflected both patience and precision. He fashioned not only the stocks, but even crafted his own screws and springs for the lock mechanisms, a testament to both his skill and his dedication to doing things the right way.

He found joy in simple pleasures, especially summers spent crabbing, where his efforts were rewarded not only in the catch, but in the sharing of it with friends and family gathered around.

Above all, Dick was a man of faith. A devoted member of Guinston Evangelical Presbyterian Church, he lived out his belief in Christ not only in word, but in quiet, steady action—through his work, his devotion to family, and the life he built with his hands. And now, having finished his earthly work, he rests in the promise of his Savior—reminded in the words of Scripture: “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
