Samuel W. Herbert, 90, of New Freedom, died Friday, April 13, 2018.He was the husband of Sarah Catherine “Cacky” (Smithson) Herbert, whom he married on January 14, 1949, they were together 68 years. Samuel was born on November 11, 1927 in Bentley Springs, MD, and was the son of the late John W. and Roberta Amelia (Wilson) Herbert. In addition to his wife, Cacky, Samuel is survived by his son, Joseph S. Herbert and his wife, Tammy of New Freedom; 3 grandchildren Kelly, Pattie, and Stevie; 5 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Lorraine and Doris. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joe, Jr.; 4 brothers, Daniel, Milton, Jimmy, Billy and 3 sisters, Leona, Nancy, and Mary. He worked as a Truck Driver, retiring from Harry T. Campbell Trucking in 1990 after 33 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; VFW, Post 7012 in New Freedom; Parkton American Legion, Post 256; and the Hanover Moose. He loved to play guitar and country music with his best friend, Joe Heltzel; traveling all the way across the United States to Red Buff, California. His music was played on theRadio Station every Saturday. He also enjoyed playing music with his band Southern Aires. He loved playing cards with his friends and watching horse races. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, April 17th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc.; 24 N. Second St. New Freedom, PA 17349. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 18th at 10:00 am at the funeral home in New Freedom with burial to follow at Stabler’s Cemetery in Parkton , MD .
